BBC EastEnders: Brian Conley reacts to huge Thomas Cotton twist

EastEnders dropped a huge plot twist during Tuesday’s episode (September 21) and viewers lost their minds.

Terry ‘Rocky’ Cant has been posing as the loving long-lost father of Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy).

Since arriving in Walford he’s managed to convince everyone, especially Sonia, he’s a genuine guy with a lot of cash.

When in reality he’s a huge fraud and he’s not even Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) real father, nor does he have any money.

During tonight’s instalment of the BBC One soap, Rocky was arrested after scratching Sonia’s new love interest’s car after he saw him getting close to another woman in Ruby’s nightclub.

Rocky’s real identity has been revealed as Thomas Cotton in EastEnders

Whilst at the police station Rocky was asked to confirm his real name and his true identity was revealed.

He announced his real name to be Thomas Cotton.

After he was released Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero) was waiting outside of the station for her ‘uncle Tom’ and lectured him on nearly ruining their plans against Sonia.

The screaming pair are wanting to get their hands on Dot’s inheritance following her exit from Walford last year, with Dot giving her power of attorney back in April this year.

Actor Brian Conley, who plays Thomas Cotton in EastEnders, has reacted to the huge plot twist.

The 60-year-old from London knew about the twist from the outset and has admitted that it was really difficult to keep a secret.

Explaining the role of Thomas Cotton, aka Rocky, and if he knew all along about the bombshell, Brian confessed: “Ooh well I was very aware when I started.

“I was fortunate enough to have it mapped out, we didn’t know his name or things like that, but it was one of the reasons that they always called me Rocky because he’s meant to be Terry but he’s actually Thomas, and that could get confusing, so they decided on Rocky – much to my amusement, as I couldn’t be further from Rocky!.”

“For me, the hardest thing was keeping it a secret. Friends would go ‘Oh I love the fact that you’re a father.’ Lots of people have commented on that and when I initially came on everyone was like ‘oh you’re Sonia’s dad’.

“You want to go – ‘yeah you just watch this space!’.

Whilst laughing he added: “It’s a relief that it’s come out, I want them all to know who he really is, and how the story will unfold.

“He’s always been charming and fun and nice but there’s never been anything more than that, so now to get this whirlwind of information as an audience, there’ll be a treat now to find out what he’s doing there, why he’s resorted to this, why this whole thing has gone on for so long.”

What we want to know is how this evil plot is going to unfold!

Brian explained: “He’s pretending to be Sonia’s dad because he has been brought in by Dotty, who has given him all the back story to be able to convince Sonia that he is her father, to fleece her of the money from Dot.

“Dot gave the house to Dotty, and Sonia feels that Dotty isn’t old enough to take on the responsibility of having the wealth of this house. So they’ve being working on convincing her that – yes this is her dad and enough so that she has the confidence and trust to listen to what he says.

“However as he goes on he feels more strongly that this is his world now and he doesn’t want to give it up. He’s gone in with his bravado thinking yes I can handle this, let’s get all this money, but as the weeks and months have gone on he very much realises now that this is his home, this is his family. It’s very well-written, I’m really excited for people to see it.”

Speaking about Thomas’ romance with Kathy Beale, Brian confirmed his characters true feelings.

He said: “He’s in love with her, but he’s been lying for so long and he just doesn’t know how to cope with it.

“He knows that he’s going to hurt her so much, one way or another. It was lovely doing the scenes where we finally able to sit next to each other after whilst working in a cohort.

Giggling, he adds: “They’ve been dating for months but never sat next to each other. Oh it wasso nice!.”
