BBC Shetland: Mark Bonnar’s life from forgotten role on The Bill to marriage to Casualty and Doctor Who actress

Shetland fans will know serial philanderer Duncan Hunter whose second marriage to Mary is now under the same strain as his first to Fran.

Despite being unreliable as a husband, he always seems to be there for Detective Jimmy Perez when he is most needed.

Fans of the show might not have realised though that actor Mark Bonnar who plays Hunter has already appeared in a raft of other famous TV shows.

Those include Bruno Jenkins in hospital drama Casualty, roles in cop shows The Bill and Line of Duty, as well as Silent Witness.

The 52-year-old even appeared in the popular shoot ‘em up video game Battlefield 1 and open world pirate game Assassins Creed: Black Flag.

Before acting, Bonnar took on random jobs to get by including door-to-door sales.

As a teenager the Scot worked selling burglar alarms on people’s doorsteps, however, he told The Guardian the company he worked for was “a bunch of shysters”.

“They just basically got impressionable young kids who were a bit lost, as I was at the time, and trained them up to get leads.

“Not to sell burglar alarms, but to get leads for salesmen to go in afterwards. And if the salesman didn’t make the sale, we didn’t get the money,” he said.

Despite a tough start in his career Bonnar has established himself as a top actor, even appearing in the legendary BBC sci-fi drama Doctor Who.

Funnily enough his wife Lucy Gaskell also starred in the show four years before Bonnar, as well as in Holby City, and Casualty.

She starred in the famous Doctor Who episode ‘Blink’, where stone angels terrifyingly follow the characters when they close their eyes.

Her stint on Casualty was by far her longest, featuring in 45 episodes as Kirsty Clements before leaving the show to give birth.

The couple married in 2007 and have since had two children Martha and Samuel, and in her spare time Gaskell is an ambassador for Domestic Violence charity Women’s Aid.
