One man is in hospital following the incident and police are awaiting an update on his condition.

Horrified neighbours described “toxic” fumes coming from the building as they watched “helplessly”.

One woman recalled hearing the screams of children and watching paramedics give CPR to a young boy.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe said: “This is a truly terrible incident which is both sad and shocking.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and local community at this difficult time.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
