A British holidaymaker has dramatically given birth in a police car during as she was rushed to hospital in Menorca.
The baby girl was born to the unnamed woman in the back of a Guardia Civil patrol car as they dashed to hospital in the holiday island’s capital Mahon.
Both mother and daughter are said to be doing well with hospital authorities describing the newborn’s condition as ‘stable.’
The drama unfolded on Monday evening when local Guardia Civil officers were called to help the woman at a restaurant in the resort of Es Mercadel. Local media said she was in the 34th week of her pregnancy and her waters had broken.
An ambulance had been called but the quick-thinking officers decided to take the woman and her partner to the Mateu Orfila Hospital in Mahon.
However, on the way, the woman’s contractions increased and she gave birth to the baby girl during the journey, the Majorca Daily Bulletin reports.
The newborn was airlifted to the specialist premature birth unit at Son Espases in neighbouring Palma de Mallorca, where the baby is reported to be in a stable condition.
Police said that the woman and her partner had been out for dinner in a local restaurant when she started to feel contractions.
