Former EastEnders star Rakhee Thakrar looks world’s apart in role in Netflix’s Sex Education

The third season of the Netflix show Sex Education has been making waves since its release last week and there’s a host of British talent in it, including former EastEnders star Rakhee Thakrar.

Rakhee, 37, is well known to Londoners for her turn on EastEnders, playing Shabnam Masood.

However, her road to the role wasn’t that straightforward.

The first actress to play Shabnam was Zahra Ahmadi, who quit the show only after a year claiming she was frustrated with the lack of storylines for her character.

When Shabnam’s character was re-introduced in January 2014- she had a completely different face in Rahkee’s.

After taking on the role, she had some rather traumatic storylines, including Shabnam and Kush’s stillborn baby.

After two years, Rahkee decided it was time to leave and Shabnam left Walford with her long-lost daughter Jade after ending her marriage with Kush.

Speaking in 2016, Rakhee revealed the reasons for her departure, as reported by the Daily Record.

Rakhee had many emotional scenes on the show

“It feels like the right time for both myself and Shabnam,” she explained. “My experience on this show has been really special, and I’m so grateful for having the chance to have played Shabs, she’s a real gift. A complicated character, who I’ve loved getting to know.

“Now, I feel like it’s the time to try different projects and new people to play. It was a hard decision as I really love this character and this show. I can’t thank [the producers] enough for trusting me with Shabnam and particularly her story.”

Rakhee admitted that while she is looking forward to seeing what the future brings, there are definitely a few faces she’ll miss from EastEnders.

“I’ve met some of the most talented, hardworking, humble people both in front of and behind the cameras,” she added.

“I’ll particularly miss Nitin [Ganatra], Himesh [Patel], Davood [Ghadami] and Lacey [Turner], I’ve learned so much from them. The brilliant scripts and directors, I could go on and on!”

Most recently Rahkee has been acting in the Netflix show Sex Education as Miss Sands where she doles out helpful sexual education tips to frustrated teenagers.

Sex Education is available to stream on Netflix.
