Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher agree on Arsenal player who ‘falls short’ on expectations

Arsenal got their 2021/22 Premier League campaign off to a disappointing starting, falling to a 2-0 defeat against newly-promoted Brentford.

The Gunners were played off the park by Thomas Frank’s side for the majority of the contest, failing to create any meaningful openings whilst also looking extremely fragile at the back.

One of the problem areas for Mikel Arteta’s men was at right-back, where Calum Chambers endured a difficult night up against Bee’s wing-back Rico Henry.

Chambers struggled to impose himself offensively, failing to register a single successful dribble down the right flank whilst also losing possession a whopping 15 times before he was eventually subbed off for Portuguese fullback Nuno Tavares and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was left unimpressed by the 26-year-old’s showing on the night.

“I know Bellerin was on the bench, if Bellerin is moving on it really does look like a problem area.”

This was echoed by former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville, who cited Chambers’ lack of physical prowess as one of the main reasons for his struggles.

Neville agreed with Carragher: “He needs to play in a back three. He’s not a right-back in a back four and not a centre-back in a back two.

“The physicality that is expected at full-back now the back four the speed before and I was looking at the end here it was an honest performance but he falls short of the physical expectations.”

football.london revealed back in May that the Gunners were hoping to buy a right-back in this summer transfer window but it is unlikely that they will be able to unless they offload one of Hector Bellerin, Cedric or Chambers.

The aforementioned Bellerin has been linked with the likes of Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in recent weeks but given the Nerazzurri have just signed Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries, a move to the San Siro looks to be off the table, with a swap deal involving Bayern’s Corentin Tolisso mooted as a potential option by some reports.
