ITV recently announced that it had commenced filming for the second season of crime thriller Grace, starring its lead actor John Simm as tenacious Detective Superintendent Roy Grace.
Fans who tuned into Season 1 in March would have remembered Simm from BBC’s Life On Mars as well as his numerous appearances as Doctor Who villain, the Master, over the years.
And anyone very up-to-date with their TV trivia may be looking forward to seeing Simm in Code of a Killer tonight on ITV. It’s a repeat of a series which first aired in 2015, which Simm stars in alongside Anna Madeley, David Threlfall, Lorcan Cranitch.
Off-screen, Simm is also recognised as being the husband of former EastEnders actor Kate Magowan, who appeared in the soap as her character Sadie Young between 2013 and 2014.
While the couple have been happily married since 2004, prior to his marriage to Magowan, Simm was known to have quite the dating life.
In his 20s, Simm briefly dated Spice Girls singer Emma Bunton, otherwise known as “Baby Spice”.
Simm reportedly met Bunton in a studio canteen. Bunton was said to be a huge fan of The Lakes series, which marked Simm’s breakthrough into the big-time.
In a previous interview, Simm has been quoted as remarking how Bunton “freaked out” when she saw him, and that he decided to take her out “just for the laugh”.
Simm admitted that didn’t expect to get along with the young, blonde popstar at all, but to his surprise, they actually got on “like a house on fire”.
Describing Bunton as the “sweetest girl imaginable”, “funny”, “charming”, and “much cooler” than he expected, Simm said they spent the evening downing tequila slammers in a club before being driven home by Bunton’s chauffeur.

But Simm was to find out later that dating a Spice Girl was a lot more complicated than he bargained for.
He claimed that Emma’s fame made it difficult for them to even step outside the front door, and that despite being “really fond” of her, he just couldn’t handle the pressure.
Simm also uttered his belief that Bunton’s team disapproved of her dating him because it “wouldn’t have been good for her image”.
“I certainly wasn’t Spice boyfriend material,” Simm said.
The short-lived relationship ended abruptly after an argument over who leaked details of their affair to the press. While Simm accused Bunton’s friends, Bunton insisted it was in fact his friends that had done it.
Looking back on the relationship, Simm said it would be “something to tell the grandchildren”, but at the same time he admitted feeling “sorry” for Bunton.
“She’s a lovely girl, and the same thing must happen to her over and over again. She deserves better.”
Code of a Killer is on tonight, Monday October 11, at 9pm on ITV.
