London’s buses are one of the safest forms of transport in the city. Each month, more than 10 million journeys are made on Transport for London (TfL) red bus services without incident.
When there is an incident though, it can prove costly. Even if a bus scrapes your car, it can affect your no claims bonus and increase your car insurance price.
That’s why it’s best to ensure you take rapid action to save you time and money when making a claim.
Firstly, you need to have tangible proof of your car being impacted.
Almost every single bus (all TfL buses and most non-TfL buses) now has external CCTV placed along the sides of the vehicles, so there is guaranteed to be proof of impact if you are able to catch the bus which has been involved in the impact.
The newest electric bus types used by TfL are now even fitted with 360 degrees CCTV to assist the driver with pulling into and out of stops safely and eliminate blindspots, meaning if your motor is tapped by one of these vehicles, the impact can be seen from every angle.

Once you have the proof, then you will need to contact the bus operator you suspect runs the bus which hit your car.
TfL can help you with this, there is a list of operators available on its website. However, if you live in an area which many non-TfL routes such as Heathrow, Kingston, Uxbridge or Selsdon, you’ll need to find the correct operator yourself.
As bus companies operate services on behalf of TfL (they own the vehicles and train the drivers), you cannot usually take out a direct claim against TfL unless there is a larger issue beyond your car being hit.

Usually, the bus operator will have procedures in place so you can arrange an insurance claim against them. It then works similarly to any other road traffic accident. If this does not work, you can contact TfL or the local council to request additional advice.
