Would I Lie To You?: Anna Maxwell Martin’s split with Hollywood director and turning down I’m a Celeb

Anna Maxwell Martin will be returning to television screens tonight as she joins the panel of Would I Lie to You?

The BAFTA winning actor has certainly had a busy year starring in the sixth series of Line of Duty as DCS Patricia Carmichael as well as playing the role of Julia Johnson in sitcom Motherland.

The star is featuring on BBC’s award-winning comedy show Would I Lie to You? tonight, hosted by Rob Brydon and lightning-quick team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack.

And, although Anna has had a glittering career in the film and television industry, the 44-year-old star declined – what may seem like – the opportunity of a lifetime.

You may be surprised to know that Anna was asked to take part in I’m A Celebrity 2021 but turned it down.

She told Grazia: “I was asked to the jungle; I would love the challenges, but I wouldn’t like the boredom.”

Her daughters were slightly more convinced after discovering family members were put into luxurious accommodation while contestants stayed in the jungle.

She recalled: “They were like, ‘Oh my God, we’re going to be in the Versace hotel for five weeks!’”

The star did admit that her participation in the much-loved show would make for some great entertainment.

“If they threw me in a coffin with those… it would be good TV,” added Martin.

But it wasn’t meant to be for the star, who recently starred in British crime drama, The Irregulars, this year.

Anna has two daughters with her ex-partner, Roger Michell, who also shares two older children with a previous partner.

Roger, a director, is famously known for directing Notting Hill – a rom-com starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

The pair got married in 2002 and announced their split last year in April.

Anna told You magazine in April 2020: “Our marriage has ended and we’ve been separated for quite some time.

“I haven’t really spoken about it because it isn’t fair on all the people involved. There are four children to think about.

“It’s taken an enormous amount of time, but we are all getting through it in a healthy way.”

Would I Lie To You? returns to television screens tonight at 8:30pm on BBC One.
